May was a month to remember as I immersed myself in a whirlwind of creativity alongside an extraordinary group of individuals on a film set. It had been years since I last experienced the vibrant energy of a film set, and let me tell you, it brought something alive within me once again. The feeling of being in the midst of the action was invigorating, rekindling my passion for capturing captivating moments. During this exhilarating time, I had the privilege of capturing behind-the-scenes footage and conducting engaging interviews with the workshop's participants and esteemed mentors.
Black Women Film, an awe-inspiring organization, handpicked six remarkable emerging and mid-career cinematographers to embark on a transformative journey. Paired with experienced DP Mentors, these aspiring talents received one-on-one training on a genuine professional film set. The chosen applicants were teamed up in pairs, collaborating with a skilled writer and director to bring a scene from an enthralling long-form series script to life. Picture this: two talented actors, an intimate interior setting, and a captivating storyline unfolding before the lens. To top it off, the workshop received generous support from Netflix, granting access to studio space and pre-existing set builds. This allowed each team to delve into advanced lighting techniques on a soundstage and master the art of directing a camera crew effectively as a Director of Photography.
