Reigniting My Passion: Behind the Scenes at the Advanced Cinematography Workshop
This past May, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in a whirlwind of creativity at the Advanced Cinematography Workshop hosted by Black Women Film. It had been years since I last experienced the vibrant energy of a film set, and this experience reignited a passion within me that I hadn't felt in a long time.
As the behind-the-scenes videographer, I was privileged to capture the magic unfolding on set. From candid moments between takes to in-depth interviews with participants and mentors, I documented the journey of six remarkable emerging and mid-career cinematographers as they honed their craft under the guidance of seasoned Director of Photography (DP) mentors.
A Collaborative Learning Environment
Black Women Film curated a transformative experience by pairing each cinematographer with an experienced DP mentor. These teams collaborated with skilled writers and directors to bring scenes from a long-form series script to life. The workshop, generously supported by Netflix, provided access to professional studio spaces and pre-existing set builds, allowing participants to delve into advanced lighting techniques and master the art of directing a camera crew effectively.
Capturing the Essence of Creativity
Being on set, surrounded by passionate creatives, reminded me of the power of storytelling through film. The workshop not only provided technical training but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration that was truly inspiring.
I invite you to watch the final edited video below, which captures the essence of the passion, creativity, and sheer magic that unfolded during this unforgettable experience.

Final Thoughts
Participating in the Advanced Cinematography Workshop was a rejuvenating experience that reminded me of my roots in filmmaking. It was an honor to document the journey of these talented cinematographers and to witness the growth and collaboration that took place. I'm grateful to Black Women Film for creating such a nurturing and empowering environment for Black women in the film industry.
