Golden Expressions: A Creative Beauty Editorial with Elsie

There’s something special about themed editorial shoots—the way a single concept can spark endless creative directions.

For this project with Elsie, gold was our inspiration. From gold flakes and beads to shimmering glitter, each element gave us a different way to explore beauty, texture, and raw expression—all against a clean white background that made her dark skin tone stand out with stunning contrast.

This shoot was all about experimentation, play, and emotion—and it became one of my favourite creative sessions to date.

The Power of Themed Shoots for Creativity

Having a theme—in this case, "gold"—gave us a clear creative direction without boxing us in.
It allowed us to:

·       Experiment with different gold materials (flakes, beads, glitter)

·       Vary the mood from shot to shot

·       Keep the visual story cohesive even while playing with different ideas

Themed shoots like this are one of my favorite ways to keep creative muscles sharp. Without the pressure of client expectations, there’s room to explore, adjust, and discover unexpected moments.

Using Texture and Detail to Build Visual Interest

Rather than relying on complicated props or backdrops, we focused on texture.

Gold flakes were carefully placed on Elsie’s lips for the first few shots, paired with a black makeup brush to introduce contrast.

Gold beads lined her eyelids in another series, adding a delicate, jewelry-like detail that felt both futuristic and regal.

Gold glitter swept across her under-eye area and nose bridge, creating a playful yet striking highlight across her face.

Shooting close-ups allowed me to really celebrate these textures. Every flake, bead, and sparkle became a key player in the image’s story.

Expressive Posing and Capturing Emotion

One of the most exciting parts of this shoot was encouraging bold, expressive posing.

In one frame, Elsie smiles softly, the gold beads shimmering across her eyelids.

In another, she pulls an intense, raw expression—yelling with her fingers spread across her head—bringing a sense of urgency and emotion to the image.

I love working with models who are open to playing with expressions and energy. It brings life to a shoot and allows the final images to feel alive instead of overly polished or static.

Even small choices—like holding the makeup brush in her mouth or angling her face just right to crop half her features—made the images feel editorial, dynamic, and full of character.

Shooting Dark Skin on a White Background

Choosing a white backdrop was intentional. It made Elsie’s beautiful skin tone and the golden elements the true stars of each frame.

When photographing dark skin against a bright background, it's important to:

·       Expose carefully to preserve richness and depth without washing out highlights

·       Light softly to maintain natural texture

·       Use the backdrop not as a distraction, but as a way to let the subject shine

The simplicity of the background let every detail—from the gold flakes to Elsie’s expressions—command full attention.

This shoot was a reminder of why it’s so important to carve out time for creative exploration. Themed shoots, playful posing, attention to texture, and a deep respect for light and skin tone came together to create something bold, beautiful, and purely fun. Creativity doesn’t always have to follow strict rules—and sometimes the most impactful images are born out of moments where you simply let go and play.
