Short Film // SEARCHING FOR JUSTICE

In October of last year, I was chosen along with six independent filmmakers from various parts of Canada for a remarkable opportunity. Our mission: to create original Super 8mm short films as part of the CAPTURE 8 commissioning project. This initiative, a virtual exhibition and showcase of new Super 8mm works, blossomed from a collaboration between The Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa (IFCO) and VUCAVU.

Returning to Super 8 filmmaking after a hiatus was exhilarating, particularly in our current post-pandemic era. The medium presents a unique challenge compared to shooting on video. Without the luxury of instant playback, there's a heightened sense of trust in the process. I love the inherent mystery that accompanies each frame captured on film. Reviewing the dailies becomes an exhilarating experience, hoping for impeccable exposure and sharp focus in every shot.

Participating in this project was incredibly fulfilling, as it granted us complete creative autonomy within the confines of an eight-minute runtime. Against the backdrop of a tumultuous world, I felt compelled to infuse relevant themes into my film. Collaborating with two exceptional dancers, Tehilah and Raquel, alongside a talented friend who crafted and performed a poignant piece of poetry for the soundtrack, lent depth and resonance to the project.

For those eager to delve deeper, VUCAVU's website provides additional insights and the opportunity to view the artist panel discussion in which I participated. It was a journey marked by creativity, collaboration, and profound artistic expression, leaving an indelible mark on all involved.

30 second excerpt from “Searching for Justice”.

Film synopsis: Searching for Justice is a thought provoking short film that delves into the lack of fairness and equality, which is deemed insignificant in many societal norms. Fluid eclectic movements of dance are interwoven with the illuminating original spoken word poetry of Brampton based poet Kells James.
